Fungal tolerance to Congo red, a cell wall integrity stress, as a promising indicator of ecological niche

Differential sensitivities to the cell wall stress caused by Congo red (CR) have been observed in many fungal species. In this study, tolerances and CR was studied with an assorted collection of species from three phylogenetic classes: Sordariomycetes, Dothideomycetes, Eurotiomycetes, orders, eight families. These grouped into different ecological niches, such as insect pathogens, plant saprotrophs, mycoparasitics. The saprotroph Aspergillus niger mycoparasite Trichoderma atroviride stood out most resistant CR, followed pathogenic fungi, a mycoparasite, other saprotrophs. pathogens had low tolerance CR. Metarhizium acridum Cordyceps fumosorosea were sensitive conclusion, may reflect niche, accordingly, closely aligned their ecology.
